B&B Gallery Presents
NIGHT VISIONS
A solo exhibition by Florence Blanchard

November 6th – 30th

Private view: Tonight / 6:30 – 9pm
In her first solo show at B&B Gallery, Florence Blanchard presents a brand new body of work composed of paintings, screen prints and mixed media installations. Bold geometric shapes, molecules, fragments and fluorescent colours collide in a planned riot of abstraction in the attempt to investigate the structural complexity of our surroundings.

A number of the works on display are inspired by her recent visit to Japan – where she completed a 350 m2 mural in Betsukai Hokkaido. The title of the show, Night Visions refers to the dreamlike compositions, often painted after dark onto circular black paper, interlocking considered detailed brush strokes with a stream of subconsciousness.

Influenced by her training as a scientist at New York University, together with Gestalt theory and pop surrealism, Blanchard presents a duality in her works’ DNA:
art v science, figurative v abstract and ephemeral v permanent. In this regard, and underpinned by a knowledge that all matter is made of particles – whether animal, human or mineral – Blanchard’s paintings magnify what the human eye can’t see, offering us her unique macroscopic view of the world.

Florence Blanchard is a painter, muralist and printmaker. She was born in Montpellier, France in 1977 and began writing graffiti in the early 1990’s. Blanchard spent ten years based in New York where she graduated with a PhD from NYU. She currently lives and works in Sheffield, UK.

MARVELOSA – Art inspired by The National Fairground Archive

Just this week opened MARVELOSA a new exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of The National Fairground Archive. 5 artists including myself were commissioned to work around material available at the archive. MARVELOSA is on view until January 8 2015 at The Western Bank Library at The University Of Sheffield. It’s been an absolute pleasure working on this. National Fairground Archive #NFA20

Since I came back from Japan I have been working on my next project: a series of painting & screenprints commisionned by the National Fairground Archive. The pieces will be part of an exhibition for the NFA’s 20th anniversary at the Western Bank Library early September. It’s been amazing to browse the archive which is a unique collection of material covering all aspects of the culture and history of travelling fairs and entertainment from the 1800’s to the present day.

I’ll be posting more photos of work in progress but here is a first glimpse.
