“The aim of every artist is to arrest motion”
William Faulkner

We are delighted to introduce the work of French painter, muralist and screenprinter Florence Blanchard.

Throughout April we will be exhibiting a small but perfectly formed group of original paintings and prints, with all works available to purchase in person from the gallery or online here.

Blanchard was one of the first female graffiti writers in France and began working in the early 1990s under the name Ema. She then moved to New York where she graduated with a PhD from New York University in 2008. This coincided with a progressive shift in style, moving away from traditional graffiti and adopting a more abstract approach. The artist’s recent work is directly inspired by her training as a scientist and depicts abstract molecular landscapes questioning the idea of visual perception.

“As a trained molecular biologist, I have thoroughly observed nature through powerful microscopic lenses. Underpinned by a knowledge that all matter is made of particles –
whether animal, human or mineral my artwork aims to magnify what the human eye can’t see. I invite viewers to immerse themselves in an uncanny macroscopic world. By representing molecules on a large-scale I aim to question our perception of our surroundings. Through bold geometric shapes, fluorescent colours and representations of particles colliding in planned riots of abstraction I aim to depict people flowing through the station at any instant with the ultimate goal to arrest this peculiar motion.”
Florence Blanchard, April 2016

These stunning works will be on display until Saturday 30th April. For further details please contact us here or call the gallery direct on +44 (0)1423 884400.

B&B Gallery Presents
NIGHT VISIONS
A solo exhibition by Florence Blanchard

November 6th – 30th

Private view: Tonight / 6:30 – 9pm
In her first solo show at B&B Gallery, Florence Blanchard presents a brand new body of work composed of paintings, screen prints and mixed media installations. Bold geometric shapes, molecules, fragments and fluorescent colours collide in a planned riot of abstraction in the attempt to investigate the structural complexity of our surroundings.

A number of the works on display are inspired by her recent visit to Japan – where she completed a 350 m2 mural in Betsukai Hokkaido. The title of the show, Night Visions refers to the dreamlike compositions, often painted after dark onto circular black paper, interlocking considered detailed brush strokes with a stream of subconsciousness.

Influenced by her training as a scientist at New York University, together with Gestalt theory and pop surrealism, Blanchard presents a duality in her works’ DNA:
art v science, figurative v abstract and ephemeral v permanent. In this regard, and underpinned by a knowledge that all matter is made of particles – whether animal, human or mineral – Blanchard’s paintings magnify what the human eye can’t see, offering us her unique macroscopic view of the world.

Florence Blanchard is a painter, muralist and printmaker. She was born in Montpellier, France in 1977 and began writing graffiti in the early 1990’s. Blanchard spent ten years based in New York where she graduated with a PhD from NYU. She currently lives and works in Sheffield, UK.

INTERSECTION an new exhibition at B&B Gallery

INTERSECTION
An exhibition of new works by Jonathan Wilkinson &
Florence Blanchard / October 17th – November 3rd
B&B are pleased to announce our latest exhibition, a collaboration between Jonathan Wilkinson (UK) and Florence Blanchard (FR) titled INTERSECTION.The show celebrates common interests and explores similarities between their studio practices, executed with their own individual style, approach and personality. Wilkinson explains – “We both work from found images and fragments of imagery which depict the modern built environment, as well vehicles and objects that inhabit such a landscape.” Blanchard agrees – “Our artworks have independently evolved towards painting dreamy situations inspired by our own experiences, tinted with an uncertainty of what the future holds. INTERSECTION felt like the perfect outlet to bring our individual world’s together as a way of creating a broader narrative based on these shared themes.” Iconic structures, vehicles and architecture sit alongside animals and abstract forms inhabiting an imagined world, situated somewhere between an American film set and a science-fiction comic book based in suburban Yorkshire. We look forward to seeing you there.
